We were thrilled to hear that Kia Utzon-Frank has won a highly coveted Wallpaper* Design Award.
A multi-talented designer, Kia works across a broad range of creative mediums, from jewellery design to cake making.
Made in collaboration with textile designer, Fay McCaul, Curved Twist featured in the window of Tarkett’s Clerkenwell-based showroom, stopping passers by in their tracks with its stunning colour changing structure.
Standing two metres tall, the exhibit combined Kia’s patented Louver Twisting Comb screen system with Fay’s expertise in combining contemporary materials and traditional knitting methods to create light-reactive pieces.
In addition, master cake maker Kia created bespoke edible cake sculptures for Tarkett to showcase its latest products. Made using a marzipan printer and special recipe, the sweet treats replicated patterns and textures found in the collections.
Her latest product Brik, for which she was awarded the Wallpaper* prize, comprises a range of terrazzo chocolate tiles that look quite literally good enough to eat!
Available in a selection of mouth watering flavours, developed in collaboration with Harrods’ head pastry chef and UK chocolatier Alistair Birt, the tiles are infused with a combination of herbs and spices for an unforgettable sensory experience.
This is the second time Kia’s work has been recognised by Wallpaper*. In 2017 she was shortlisted for a cake she designed for Sir Terence Conran’s 85th birthday.
We’d like to congratulate Kia, and look forward to seeing the designs she cooks up next!
