Working for a better tomorrow

Many are feeling more overwhelmed by the challenge of tackling climate change than ever. It’s so complex and multifaceted it’s hard to know where to begin. We think we’ve found our starting point here at Hattrick in a simple Swedish life concept – ‘Lagom’ [pronounced la-gum].

Lagom is one of those virtually untranslatable words in a language that is almost a feeling. It roughly means walking the line between too much and too little; a place where everything is in balance.

Growing up in 1980s Sweden, ‘lagom’ was almost a slur – a lack of ambition. But today the concept of achieving balance in the world seems like a real challenge – in fact, hugely ambitious. For us, it seems like the natural place to start our own journey towards what really should matter; for everyone and everything. The planet, our people, our clients and everyone we work with.

So, what can a niche content marketing agency in Manchester do to measure-up to being more ‘lagom’ (I can hear my fellow Swedes shifting uncomfortably)?

Well, do our bit. Set ambitious goals – and get started. As Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, said, “To do good, you actually have to do something.”

So we did. We’re very proud members of 1% for the Planet – playing our small part in tackling a huge challenge.

1% for the planet is a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through everyday actions. With the commitment to donate 1% of their turnover to not-for-profits working to combat climate change.

That is clearly not going to be enough and when it comes to settling goals, ‘lagom’ is definitely not going to hit the mark.

So we’re also working towards a B Corp certification – that will require time, dedication and resources – but that will help us take another step towards achieving a better balance as a business between people, planet – and profit.

As part of this, we are supporting regional social impact projects including the amazing team at Make Bank. They are dedicated to improving diversity in the creative industries by ensuring that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds have the materials they need to progress. Watch this space.
