'Hygge' is a way of life in Scandinavia. It's the feeling of well-being you get by appreciating life's small pleasures and togetherness.

So, for a more 'conscious' Christmas here are our favourite festive tips.

Conscious Christmas

The pressure to pull off a show-stopping spread can be overwhelming this time of year and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important.

This might sound like a quote straight out of every classic Christmas film (ever), but stripping the Festivities back 'Scandi-style' could help us all feel more content.

And, it also addresses something else that the Hattrick team is very passionate about: winter wastage. Here are our favourite festive tips for celebrating Christmas more consciously.

Shiny, glittered decorations may look pretty, but they’re virtually impossible to recycle. Luckily, there are plenty of creative ways to ensure your gifts look the part, without detriment to the environment:

  • Eco-friendly alternatives: Opt for reusable alternatives to traditional wrapping paper, such as fabric, newspaper, or even scarves.

  • Creative DIY wrapping: If you’re handy with a needle, sew your own cloth bags that can be reused each year, reducing the need for disposable wrapping paper. Decorate with twigs, pinecones, or dried flowers instead of plastic bows and ribbons.

  • Reuse to reduce: Save and repurpose intact boxes and bags from Christmases gone by to give gifts in a more sustainable way - plus, it’ll save you a bit, too!

Gift-giving is central to Christmas celebrations for many, but did you know that over 22 million unwanted presents end up in landfill every year!

Instead of adding to the pile, consider one of these:

  • Mindful gifting: Consider experiences or a subscription to an e-magazine, a trip to the theatre, or tickets to a paint-and-sip class.

  • Wishlist sharing: Encourage loved ones to write a (reasonable) wish list. You'll make 'top Santa' - and it helps minimise waste.

  • Go secondhand: New isn’t necessarily best. For unique and truly personal gift local charity shop are treasure troves.

Nothing screams Christmas like a festive feast, but it’s easy to get carried away. Wrap estimates that we waste around two million turkeys and 74 million mince pies each December.

  • Thoughtful meal planning: Plan carefully to avoid overbuying. Consider portion sizes, dietary preferences, and plan for creative ways to use leftovers.

  • Donate unused food: Connect with local food banks to donate any excess Christmas dinner. Apps such as Olio also help you share unwanted food - and gifts for that matter - locally.

  • Sustainable cooking practices: Compost food scraps and get inventive with your leftovers. You could also include more plant-based options, which have a lower carbon footprint than traditional meat ones.
